JBS students create book spine poetry to celebrate National Poetry Month

by JHB Library Assistant Melisa Dugal

National Poetry Month is celebrated nationwide during the entire month of April. In the past, I have put out displays and read poetry to the students, but this year I wanted to do something with them that was a bit more interactive.

I selected a bunch of books with interesting, funny or descriptive titles and piled them in the library. Students chose books and arranged them in a pile so that the titles on the spines read like a poem from top to bottom.

It sounds easy, but really takes some thought! Several students chose to work collaboratively on a poem, which was fun to watch
