JHB focuses on trauma-informed practices
This year, JHB will be focusing our professional development on becoming more cognizant of how we support students who arrive at school each day affected by trauma. Our focus will be on how the events are impacting our students’ ability to learn. Our goal will be to create more nurturing, trauma-sensitive learning environments for all students.
Part of our work will center around using the book Fostering Resilient Learners by Kristin Souers as a staff book talk. From this work, we will increase our awareness of adverse childhood experiences, and work to implement tools and strategies to support students. These tools include a daily check-in to monitor students’ emotional states and a calming corner for students to regulate their emotions.
