Author Visit + Literacy Night with Kevin Hawkes

James H. Bean School welcomed Kevin Hawkes, a Maine-based author and illustrator of over 60 books, including the New York Times bestseller Library Lion. His visit, made possible through a grant from the Literacy Fund at the Maine Community Foundation, offered students an inside look at the illustration process. Hawkes demonstrated his pastel techniques, shared his sketchbooks, and discussed the timeline and tools involved in creating a picture book. Students were fascinated by his methods and asked insightful questions such as, “What is your favorite book you’ve illustrated?” and “Who do you look up to as an illustrator?” Feedback from students included, “To me, the author visit was one million out of ten!” — Kaylynn, 2nd grade, and “I liked how he changed something small into a masterpiece. He was amazing!” — Ian, 1st grade. Students also had the opportunity to purchase books and have them signed by Mr. Hawkes.

Later that evening, Mr. Hawkes returned for Literacy Night, where families engaged in interactive illustration activities. Students and parents learned about the illustration process and even tried drawing characters with Mr. Hawkes’ guidance. The event allowed families to connect through literature and creativity, and Mr. Hawkes remained available for conversations and book signings. It was a memorable experience for the entire school community. #WeAreRSU18 #JHBdragons
